The Friendship of a man and his 1,200 pet pigs

Everyone loves their pets. But this Japanese farmer has great love for his, and they are not cats, dogs nor parakeets, but yes twelve hundred hogs.

The Japanese photographer Toshiteu Yamaji spent years documenting the life of Otchan, this friendly farmer who treats his pigs like his children, taking naps and walking them.

According Otchan, this treatment of pigs is his way to "compensate" the sad future of animals that go to slaughter.
This story was published in a book "Pigs and Papa".

Healthy potato chips made of insects! Super!

The Six Foods created fries made of crickets that could cause the western world to change their eating habits.
The meat industry produces almost a fifth of all greenhouse gases created, occupy vast amounts of land, resources and energy, and is based on techniques that contribute to animal cruelty.

The idea of three Harvard graduates – Laura D’Asaro, Rose Wang e Meryl Natow – the first product of startup is Chirps, it's a naturallow-fat gluten free chip, instead of the usual potato or corn, Chirps are created from a mixture of ground grains, rice and powdered crickets, which are baked instead of fried.

The result is a bag of potato chips containing 7 grams of protein - more than one egg. This comes from the fact that the cricket meat provides more nutrients and proteins than traditional meat. All of this without harming nature.

Would you dare to try it? I know I would!

If your reaction is "ewwww! gross!", remember that in each chocolate bar are, on average, six cockroach legs!

The First SmartPhone Made of Bamboo!

The British company AD Creative has just launched the first smartphone made from bamboo fiber, the ADzero, with Android system and personalized interface.
The product is considered innovative and sustainable by using bamboo instead of plastic in their structure, and only a few units will be produced, in order to become a unique and conscious consumption product.

The device uses the Android 4.0 operating system with Google and a custom interface developed specifically for the ADzero, named ADAOS. The junction of the Android system and ADAOS was named by the company as technologic "perfection".

The prototype was developed by a 24 year old designer, Kieron-Scott Woodhouse that promoted his ideas on social networks. A Chinese investor believed in the project and financially invested in the development of ADzero, so the young company AD Creative was born, with the motto "together reinventing the simplicity."

The Island of the swimming pigs

Big Major Cay is one of the paradise islands of the Bahamas.
Crystal clear water, white sand... a true paradise!

So far so normal because it is a common thing in the Bahamas, but this island has something interesting about it...

The only difference is that this island is completely uninhabited, I mean uninhabited by humans, because this island, for a totally unknown reason, is inhabited only by pigs.

A swimmer pig in Big Major Island
Surely a boat with pigs must have been shipwrecked near the island and the pigs, as excellent swimmers, managed to get there.
In fact, if even elephants can swim, why shouldn't a pig?

The island became a tourist attraction because when a boat approaches, the swimming pigs come looking for food, near the tourists.

swimming pig searching for food
The three little piggies?
Pigs taking a nap on the beach
And they are cute!
An interesting detail is that we think pigs are dirty, but notice how clean is this island, uninhabited by humans ...
A true paradox for an island full of pigs, I'm sure it would be different if it was full of humans.

182 Years Old Giant Turtle

Although it may not be as fast as it used to be, 182 years old Jonathan, the giant tortoise,  is still going strong. He may be the oldest living turtle, or even living land animal, in the world.

It is thought that Jonathan was taken to the island of St. Helena in 1882. A photo from 1902 shows his adult size.
It can take 50 years for a giant tortoise to reach its adult size, meaning that he could have been born in 1832!

HUGE WASPS KILLING PEOPLE

In China, giant wasps are attacking people and doing many victims. More than 1600 people have been attacked in three months in which 42 people have died 205 were hospitalized.

The Asian wasp known as Giant Hornet,  is the largest in the world.

The explanation of the recent attacks, would be that with the extinction of certain wasp predators such as certain birds or spiders, linked to climate change as the high abnormal heat in these last months that are the wasps specially nervous.

THE ARM OF ONE OF THE VICTIMS

They mainly attack people who are running. In group, the wasp is known to be a ruthless hunter, the giant hornet attacks typically large insects like crickets and bees and is able to tear the heads of insects in a few seconds with their massive jaws.

The venom of the wasp and it's sting are extremely painful, and deaths are usually caused by an allergic reaction to the venom.

Yellow River, the Wild River

Stunning images of the Yellow River in China, during the "sand washing".

The Yellow River is the second longest river in China that has the particularity to be very rich in a type of mud formed from the erosion of rocks of the great Chinese plains. The river is filled with yellow sand that ends up giving this color to the river.

To prevent the river from rising too much because of this excess mud and sand, the Chinese government decided to "empty" the river in the Yellow Sea. Millions of cubic meters of water are dumped, this way, getting rid of the excess mud of the river.

When this happens in the Yellow River offers stunning images:

Sewing Machine's Needles: lethal weapons in World War II

You know that old Singer sewing machine that used to be in grandma's house?

Well, the needles of these contraptions have been used as lethal weapons.

On December 23, 1941, the factory of Singer sewing machines, located in Bristol, England, received a strange request: the largest order of sewing machine needles in the whole story. But they were no ordinary needles. The request was full of specifications and conditions. An executive of Singer, intrigued, asked.

"We do not know exactly what they want. According to the specifications, it seems that they need needles for another purpose other than sewing machines."
He was right: the same request had REALLY nothing to do with sewing. To begin with, the request was made by the Research Center of the British  Ministry of War, where they did experiments with chemical and biological weapons.

Researchers there led by British bacteriologist Paul Fildesy, working with Canadian and American scientists - developed a kind of "non-destructive" weapon. Meaning, not in the sense of big explosions. They wanted a highly lethal weapon to be used in open field against enemy troops, but that would not destroy the location as conventional bombs and mustard gas did.

The idea was to develop darts with needles – ordered at Singer – with antrax or ricina. The needle had a small compartment with the toxin and it would be sealed with cotton and wax.
To calculate the percentage of hits, tests were conducted on animals. The results impressed:
90% of enemy soldiers, in horizontal position, and 17% of those in the trench would be hit.
The effects of a dart were fatal.

If the soldier plucked the needle out after 30 seconds, he would be dead in less than 30 minutes. If the dart was withdrew before 30 seconds after the hit, within five minutes the victim would collapse incapacitated.
Despite the proven destructive effectiveness and low production cost, the Ministry of War aborted the project. The justification was that this weapon was ineffective when it came to hitting targets in buildings or vehicles, something that would be no problem with conventional bombs.

The Secret of Friendships that Last

What makes people become friends? And why do some friendships last and others do not?

An article in  the site Psychology Today gathered some studies that bring good explanations about the topic.
The well practical, main points are listed below:

Conditions to start a friendship

Besides some basic factors, such as having contact with a person on a regular basis (after all, we have more chances to know someone better and further develop our bond) and having some common interests, these two aspects are important for becoming friends with someone.

1. Willingness to open up

According to Beverley Fehr, a researcher at the University of Winnipeg and author of "Friendship Processes" what determines that we move from acquaintances to friends is the willingness to open up and reveal more personal things to each other – and this needs to come from both sides.

"In the early stages of friendship, this tends to be a gradual process. A person accepts the risk of revealing personal information and 'tests' if the other does the same "she says.

Here, reciprocity is essential for it to work, because it leads to another important condition:

2. Intimacy

According to Fehr's research, people with good friendships involving the same sex have a good understanding of what intimacy involves:
They know how to open up and express their emotions, know what to say when the friend tells you something and respect the limits - understand, for example, sincerity does not mean talking all that comes to mind, especially with regard to opinions on life and tastes.

Especially because other conditions were pointed out: Acceptance, loyalty and trust. These qualities were considered more important than practical aids such as lending money.

Then, Why do some friendships last and others do not?

Ok, we understand what gives the friendships that initial kick forward. But there is another important factor, discovered by social psychologists Carolyn Weisz and Lisa F. Wood, from University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma, Washington, which is essential to make relationships last:

...The support to our social identity.
In other words, looking for friends who understand and validate the idea that we have about ourselves and about our role in society or group to which we belong – which can be linked to religion, ethnicity, profession or even participating in some club or subculture.

To reach this conclusion, they followed a group of college students for years throughout their graduation, asking them to describe levels of proximity, contact, general support and support for social identity that felt about friends.
The conclusion was that all these factors helped to predict whether the friendship would be maintained or not.

But a single factor can predict who would be elevated to the position of BEST FRIEND: the person in these cases was part of the same group (fraternity, team, etc.) or at least supported and reaffirmed the role of the friend within that group.

A Christian could have a best friend as someone who had different beliefs, as long as this friend would support his identity as a Christian. And, as we have various roles in life, it is more likely that our best friend is on the role that is most important to us, that best represents our identity or part of it.

Why do we chose friends?

According to the study, it is related to higher levels of intimacy and understanding also involving increased self-esteem.
This sense of identity even influences the behavior of drug addicts. In another study Weisz concluded that people were more likely to get rid of their addictions after three months when they felt that their social roles and sense of identity conflicted with drug use.

"Our social identities are so important to us that we are willing to stay with people who support our social identity and getting away from those who do not. We can even change friends when the former did not support our current view of ourselves ", states an article of Psychology Today. "Conventional wisdom says that we choose friends because of who they are. But it turns out we really love them because of how they support who we are."

How to maintain a friendship

According to Debra Oswald, a psychologist at Marquette University (Wisconsin, USA), who studied the relationship between volunteers who were in high school and their best friends, there are four basic behaviors needed to maintain this "link" – that are valid to everyone, no matter if you have 15 or 70 years.

The first two points are fairly explored so far: take the initiative to open up and supporting our friends. The third point is INTERACTION. No matter if your friend is your neighbor or is living on another continent: you need to be in contact with him, either writing, chatting on the phone, visiting. Fortunately, with the internet, physical proximity has little effect on our ability to maintain a friendship or any type of relationship.

Finally, it is important to be positive. We need to open ourselves to our friends, but that does not mean it's okay to stay whimpering for hours and only see the negative side of everything.
Of course, part of being a friend is to help during the hassles of our friend's life but, in the end, the intimacy that makes a friendship thrive must be something nice and do good for both sides.

I really enjoyed writing his article because it really made me understand why I have lost some great friendships, because some of this conditions were not worked enough by me, or by the people who no longer are important to me as friends.

But not everything is lost, some friends are worth it and some friendships can be repaired.

Mike Libby and Cybernetic Insect Sculptures

Beetles, bees, grasshoppers, butterflies, spiders, scorpions are part of the artwork of the artist Mike Libby in his exposition: I, insects.

The artist transforms, equipping them with small mechanical parts that give them the cyber appearance. It is an opportunity to confirm that there are stunningly beautiful insects.

The idea of equipping the insects with mechanical parts occurred to Libby a few years ago, after having found a dead beetle.
The beauty of the animal and how its various parts were articulated were the starting point for this work...

Libby empties insects (in the case of beetles) and puts in small inner parts of the mechanisms of clocks, but also electronics and even sewing machines's parts and other equipment.

It is nature and art showing their beauty.
